FAQ
S550B, S552B and S556B Viewing Heads Q. No Signal from the viewing head when used with Models P520 or P522 Signal processors.
  • The viewing head was disconnected from the Signal processor while powered up. Reconnect the cable and cycle the power

  • The Source Impedance resistors that came wired to the viewing head connector on the P522 were removed, or were not installed on the P520. Re-install the resistor.
NOTE: A source impedance resistor is required when using the P522/P520 signal Processor with a S550B, S552B or S556B viewing head. The resistor should be 330 ohms 1/4 watt (factory installed on the viewing head connector on the P522, or included in the box with the P520 Signal Processor) for viewing head cable lengths up to 500 feet.
For Cable lengths of 500 to 1000 feet, the resistor value should be 150 ohms 1/4 watt. This resistor is included in the box with either processor. The resistor should be connected across the SC and SIG GND terminals on the signal processor.

  • The Red plug on the viewing head is wired incorrectly.
When using the C328 cable,  ensure that the white wire is connected to the SIG terminal of the signal processor connector and the shield that surrounds the white signal wire is wired to SIG GND.

M700, 800 Signal Processors and 700 / 800 Viewing Heads

Q. There is a no signal indication

  • The signal processor is not communicating with the viewing head.
The unit is not wired correctly - There are Two different methods of wiring the Model 700 Signal Processor depending on which color cable is being used. The IRIS C330 light blue cable is wired differently to the Grey cable previously supplied with 700 / 800 series viewing heads.
New wiring diagrams are supplied with all units shipped showing both wiring methods. You can also download or view the updated wiring diagram in the manuals download section or click here.

Q. Communication stopped on RS422

  • Cycle the power on the signal processor (Turn off power and turn back on after a few seconds)

Q. How do I attach conduit to Models 700/800 viewing heads using c330 cable

  • Click here to view a picture showing the assembly of the various components used to attach the conduit to the viewing head plug.

Q. What is the procedure for doing analog output calculations for the 700 Signal Processor?

  • Analog output should be 65% when the total counts = Flame on relay setting.

  • This should be computed:

    • 0 to 20 Analog output  =  Total  Flame count  * 65%  /  Flame on Set Point

  • Example

    • With a Flame on Set point of 14: Then the 4 to 20mA  will be linear from 4mA to 20mA over a flame count range of 0 to 21 flame counts above which it will be maxed out at 19.85mA.

Convert (0 to 20) to (4 to 20):

  • The analog output is scaled for 0 to 20 or 4 to 20mA.

    • 4 to 20 Analog out  =  (0 to 20 Analog out * 0.8) + ( 4 ma offset)

  • Computed values over 20 ma are set to maximum (truncated).

    • Actual maximum value is about 19.85 ma

FlameTools for Palm OS

Q. Will my Palm run FlameTools for Palm?

Flame Tools for Palm OS has been tested on the following devices:

  • Tungsten T3

  • Tungsten T2

  • Tungsten T

  • Tungsten C

  • Garmin GPS iQue 3600

  • Treo 600 cell phone (low res) (note: REQUIRES special cable with a long lead time)

  • Other devices may work.

Devices not supported
These are a few devices without EIA 232 (rs232)  support and will not work.

    • Zire 21

    • Zire 31

    • Zire 72

    • Tungsten E

Future devices:
Palm has not yet designed an EIA 232 cable for the newest products.
We have been in contact with the designers and will be notified when a cable becomes available.

  • Treo 650 (no  Cable)

  • Tungsten 5 (no Cable)

IRIS offers an easy connection solution for interfacing supported Palm to IRIS processors:

P531, P532, P520, P522 Signal Processors

Q. What is the procedure for analog output calculations?

  • Flame count multiplied by the Analog out gain scaled over maximum flame count

    • Using formula: (count * gain)/3300 = 0 to 20 milliamp output.

Q. Do IRIS Signal Processors support 2 wire RS-485?

  • Yes: Due to the half duplex nature of RS-422 multi-drop it will work with RS-485.

    • Wiring: connect (TX+ to RX+) and (TX- to RX-).

    • You actually need 3 wires (one for signal ground).

  • NOTE: The master computer communications converter must emulate RS-485.

    • Unlike a RS-422 The RS-485 master will shut off its transmitter and listen for replies.

Q. Why does channel "B" not see the S55x Viewing Head?

  • Configuration requires detection of the S55x Viewing Head once for each channel and detection can only happen at power up.
Once detected, the model number of the Viewing head is saved internally and will not need detection again unless the model number of the Viewing Head is changed.
This enables compatibility with Viewing Heads that have no gain adjustments which do not require detection.

    Procedure:
        1) Select channel "B" by applying power to the "Chan Sel" pins
        2) Cycle power to the processor.
